The opening ceremony of the NATO airbase in Kuçovo has started.  

During the opening of the NATO air base, the highest heads of state and representatives of the Alliance have arrived to participate in the inauguration of the NATO tactical base in Kučovo.

With the inauguration of the base on March 4, NATO troops and its aircraft will be accommodated, trained and flown from the Kuçova air base. This tactical airbase was also mentioned by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken during his visit to Tirana.

At the ceremony, the Minister of Defense, Niko Peleshi, began his speech, followed by the Chief of the General Staff, Major General Arben Kingji, the Chargé d'Affaires of the American Embassy, ​​David Wisner, the Turkish Minister of Defense, Yasar Guler, the Italian Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto, Prime Minister Edi Rama, Speaker Lindita Nikolla and President Bajram Begaj.

According to Prime Minister Edi Rama, the NATO Tactical Air Base will play a key role in supporting the operations and exercises of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, also serving as a center for Air Force activities, with advanced infrastructure for aircraft fighters and transports of the Alliance.

Approximately 50 million euros have been invested by NATO and more than 5 million euros have been invested by the Albanian government. The Albanian authorities have undertaken the construction of the security perimeter and connecting roads, lighting, the installation of base security cameras and intrusion detection sensors along the perimeter of the base.

Albania is a member of NATO since 2009.
