"Defender Europe 2025" starts tomorrow in Albania/ NATO sends another

On Tuesday morning, Albania will become the main arena of one of the largest military exercises ever held in the Western Balkans and beyond.

"Defender Europe 2025," an operation orchestrated by the United States European Command (USEUCOM), will bring tens of thousands of troops from the United States, NATO member countries, and strategic partners to the field, in a powerful demonstration of international military cooperation and readiness.

The exercise will begin tomorrow, with the march of troops from the Zall-Herri military garrison to the Bize Training Center, where the most intensive phases of the military maneuvers will take place. Sources from the Ministry of Defense indicate that the scenarios envisaged include offensive and defensive operations in difficult terrain, rapid deployment exercises, protection of critical infrastructure and response to hybrid threats.

“Defender Europe 25” is conceived in accordance with Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, which guarantees collective defense against any external attack on a member state. In this context, the participation of Albania and Kosovo as host countries is not simply a logistical formality, but a clear sign of the strategic role that these countries are playing in the new Euro-Atlantic security architecture.

The focus of this exercise is to test the interoperability of allied forces, real-time coordination, and increasing capabilities to confront potential threats in an increasingly complex operational environment. Unlike previous years, this time there will be a special emphasis on advanced logistics, cybersecurity, and coping with large-scale crises.

Besides Albania, another strategic training hub is Kosovo, where troops will be trained in border security, emergency management and rapid deployment scenarios. According to NATO sources, joint intervention in simulated crisis scenarios will significantly strengthen cohesion between the participating armies.

This is the fourth time that Albania plays a central role in the “Defender Europe” series of exercises, confirming its status as a reliable ally on NATO’s southern border. According to the Albanian Armed Forces Command, our country’s involvement in this mega-operation is a testament to the trust of international partners, but also a proof of the transformation that the Albanian army has undergone in recent years, from an old and slow structure, to a modern and integrated force.
