Device more broken than working, scheme to drive x-ray patients to private

" It is the big agreement from the Ministry of Health or QSUNT with other actors in the field. Delay this, with bureaucratic procedures, for so long he withdraws the investment money. Always the small one eats, the big one escapes, the small fish stays in the net, the big one breaks the net, the agreement in politics is made with the private market actors to delay some investments or reforms so that the citizens go to the private sector. Those who have money go directly to the private sector, they don't stop at bureaucratic procedures, citizens who can't afford it go to the state, asking them for a tip is unacceptable", said Gazmend Koduzi, Professor of Health Management.

The situation continued the same in the month of July. The patients underwent two days of radiation and then were informed again that the device had malfunctioned.

In monitoring this situation, Inside Story researched the private market in the country to understand what solutions patients might have.

It turns out that radiation sessions can only be done at the "Hygea" hospital in Tirana at a high cost, unaffordable for patients. So, a situation that raises doubts about the consolidation and continuation of the scheme that orients towards the private sector.

To better understand the importance of radiation and the irreparable harm caused to patients if it is interrupted, we need to clarify the treatment protocol. Once the patient is diagnosed with a tumor, he may need a surgical intervention.

40 days after surgery, radiation therapy must follow, then chemotherapy and finally hormone treatment. If one of these links is disconnected, i.e. it does not work or continuous interruptions occur, the entire medication therapy fails, endangering the patient's life. All other treatments can be obtained in some private hospitals. The exception is the beams that are only available at Hygeia.

But what is the cost? It turns out that 20 radiation sessions cost a minimum of 2,600 euros and a maximum of 6,400 euros. This is determined depending on what the doctor recommended and the number of sessions.

An unaffordable bill for many poor patients. Is this a device failure in the state or a deal that takes the money to the private sector? This should be investigated by the law enforcement agencies, why the device breaks down so often./ InsideStory
