Paracetamol has side effects, but it has not been proven to cause autism. Doctor Erion Dasho has commented on US President Donald Trump's statements that Tylenol is linked to autism.
"Autism has many causes that we call multifactorial, genetic, developmental, social, and simplifying that Tylenol or vaccines cause autism only brings up some graphs that are outside of science. Trump referred to scientific studies, but they have not conclusively proven that paracetamol has a cause-and-effect relationship with autism. There are scientific communities that conduct studies that must be definitively approved," he said.
The doctor acknowledged the side effects of paracetamol, but stressed that its benefits are greater in terms of pain and fever. He considers it wrong to involve politics in such statements that belong to the scientific community.
"Paracetamol has known side effects, but it has been used in medicine for 150 years, for the treatment of pain and fever. Of course it has side effects, but when comparing the effects with the benefits, it turns out that the benefits are higher. To include autism in this, which is still unproven by the scientific community to cause autism, even in a mild form, is wrong, and above all, the involvement of politics in technical medical decision-making is wrong," he told "A2 CNN".
According to Dasho, statements linking autism to vaccination are also wrong. According to him, vaccination programs have saved millions of lives worldwide.
"When autism is linked to vaccination, it has created mistrust. Childhood vaccines have saved hundreds of thousands and millions of lives worldwide, eliminating smallpox and other diseases. Undermining vaccination programs with unproven arguments is wrong, and I hope we have a situation where doctors and researchers have the final say," he concluded.
