With the signature of Edi Rama, the preliminary phase of the project in the Petrela hills officially begins. Behind the concept of "religious harmony", the documents reveal a massive tourist development in one of the most coveted areas near Tirana.
The Albanian government has officially approved the launch of the preliminary phase of the "Faith Park", a project presented as a symbol of religious harmony, but which in official documents appears as a giant tourist development with dozens of accommodation structures, restaurants and major interventions in a mainly state-owned territory near Petrela Castle.
The decision signed today by Prime Minister Edi Rama assigns the Albanian Development Fund as the contracting authority and implementing unit for the realization of the first phase of the project, which will extend to approximately 210 thousand square meters in the Petrela hills, on the edge of the Erzen valley.
The document stipulates that the Albanian Development Fund will deal with public procurement procedures, the design and construction of basic infrastructure, including road access, parking, underground infrastructure, and security and territorial fencing elements.
But while the project has been publicly promoted as a space dedicated to religious coexistence and spiritual tourism, the documents reveal another dimension of the development that is expected to transform the entire area around Petrela Castle.
According to the materials of the Albanian Investment Corporation, dozens of accommodation structures called “hospitable shelters” are planned within the “Faith Park”, intended for tourists, spiritual pilgrims and VIP visitors. The documents speak of 75 accommodation units and 25 other permanent structures for retreats and wellness activities, which in practice translates into a large hotel and tourism complex.
The project also includes restaurants and food service spaces, designed to handle the influx of visitors and guests to the hospitality structures.
The entire area where the intervention will take place is considered one of the territories with the highest tourist potential near the capital. The project documents themselves emphasize Petrela's strategic position, only 15 kilometers from Tirana and near the Tirana-Elbasan axis, with quick connections to Rinas Airport, the Port of Durrës and the Blue Corridor.
According to published data, out of 210 thousand square meters of total area, about 165 thousand square meters are public property, which has raised questions about how the territory will be used and who the real beneficiaries of the development will be.
The project was conceived by Danish studio BIG Bjarke Ingels Group, which won among 12 international architecture studios. The concept envisages the construction of spaces inspired by symbols of religious beliefs, thematic gardens and structures similar to international projects in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Berlin or Israel.
In addition, the competition documents acknowledge that part of the proposed territory overlaps with the Protected Area of the Ancient Walls and Tomb of Persqopi, one of the most important Illyrian sites in Albania.
In this area are the ruins of the ancient city of Përsqop (Brysaka), a settlement of the 4th century BC, which according to archaeologist Neritan Ceka, was the residence of the Illyrian king Glauk and the controversial childhood home of Pyrrhus of Epirus.
