European Council President: Albania could join the EU before 2030

The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, congratulated Prime Minister Edi Rama on his victory in the May 11 elections. At a joint conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama in Tirana, Costa said that cooperation will be deepened.

"Thank you dear Prime Minister for this warm hospitality. It is a pleasure to end the tour in Tirana. For the EU, integration is the best geopolitical investment, it is the right moment. Albania is the embodiment of the EU enlargement process. The election result confirmed the desire of Albanian citizens to integrate into the EU. I congratulate you on this victory. EU membership is our common commitment. Keep your eyes on this objective. Maintaining the pace and intensifying the work. We stand shoulder to shoulder in the international arena. Europe does not only mean prosperity, values, Europe also needs our common face" , he emphasized.

Further, Costa added that Albania could be in the European family even before 2030. He emphasized that if the tasks given by the EU are fulfilled by Albania, the process could be accelerated.

"I am not looking for a magic date. We will see Albania's achievements day by day. Why not before? Why not before 2030. If it continues with these results, it is possible to be a member before 2030. It all depends on you. I have this message for you, in the coming months I am sure that you will do an excellent job and when next year comes, this question will no longer be there. Albania will become a member state soon. We are living in a special moment in the world, and more than ever we need to go through the unification of Europe, this brings us to this moment for enlargement. The Western Balkans have brought us and shown us before that they want to join. My wish is that all six countries move forward with the conclusion of the negotiations, this is not just about doing the work but about how it will function.

I know it is not easy, but this is the right way to move forward. What I say to all countries is trust us, we have a clear will in the European Council. We must use this moment, I remember when we came here in Tirana, and Rama said no one trusts you anymore, but what has happened with the Balkan countries but also how the EU has changed in mentality I am sure that Rama also thinks differently now , "he said.
