"The Kakavija Border Police, through the Kakavija Joint Information Exchange Center, has been notified by the Greek Border Police that today, from 19:00 to 22:00 (Greek time), the Kakavija-Ioannina road axis, at the intersection of the village of Kallpaq, will be blocked due to the protest that farmers will hold. Only vehicles that have health emergencies will be allowed to circulate," the police announced today.
Greece has been "paralyzed" for four weeks by protests by farmers, who have blocked national highways over delays in granting EU subsidies following a corruption scandal.
They are determined to continue and intensify their protests if their demands are not met by the government.
The opposition has criticized the government's treatment of farmers, calling for greater transparency, timely aid payments, and "intervention" to reduce production costs.
Eurostat data sheds light on the reasons for the discontent: Greece ranks second from bottom in the EU for average annual wages, while in terms of purchasing power it is in last place. Unions speak of unbearable economic pressure and demand real wage increases.
