As protesters were being covered in tear gas fired by police, Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha fled the area of the clashes and isolated himself at the DP headquarters. He was wearing a gas mask as he retreated.
At the same time, in a video that is circulating, his son-in-law, Jamarbër Malltezi, is seen following the clashes from above, near the Namazgja Mosque area, while tensions between protesters and law enforcement continued below.
The footage shows that while there were confrontations with tear gas on the ground, opposition leaders were not among the crowd in the final moments of the escalation. There has been no official reaction from the Democratic Party regarding Berisha's departure or the published footage.
