The Socialist Party has approved an amendment to the criminal amnesty draft, expanding the category of beneficiaries.
According to the new version, the amnesty will benefit persons who have received a final sentence until May 31, 2026.
In the initial draft prepared by the Ministry of Justice, the deadline was set for May 31, 2025. The amendment approved by the majority postpones the date for benefiting from the amnesty by one year.
The draft law is expected to be passed for approval at the June 18 plenary session in the Assembly.
According to the Ministry of Justice, amnesty is based on the principles of humanity and rehabilitation.
"This amnesty has an increased focus on vulnerable groups such as minors, women, mothers with children and the elderly. But prisons will also benefit from this, which will be relieved of the burden," says the Deputy Minister of Justice.
The current draft states that "men who, by December 31, 2025, have been sentenced by a final decision to up to 3 years in prison or have 3 years left to serve, or women who have been sentenced or have 4 years left to serve by the last day of the previous year will be released immediately."
According to the Ministry of Justice, five women will receive immediate remission of their sentences and ten others will receive reductions in their sentences. Meanwhile, four minors are included in the beneficiary categories. The greatest effects are expected for persons serving sentences on probation.

Despite the debate that accompanies every amnesty, the government insists that public safety is not affected, as perpetrators of the most serious criminal offenses are excluded from the benefits.
