The US president declares that he no longer wants negotiations with Tehran, while the US justifies the attacks as a response to the attack on merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
United States President Donald Trump has commented for the first time on the US military's airstrikes on Iran, stating that American forces "attacked very strongly" overnight.
During a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Ankara, Trump defended the military operation and used harsh language towards the Iranian leadership.
"They're sick. There's something wrong with them. We said, 'Go and do your own funeral,' and instead, they started shooting missiles and ships yesterday. So we hit them very hard last night," Trump said, referring to recent developments.
Trump claimed that the US strikes were "20 times more severe" than the Iranian retaliatory strikes.
"I told them every time you hit, we hit. Then of course they're dirty players, so they go after everyone. So we don't like them, I don't like them, and they're bad people," he said.
The US president also stated that the US has wasted a lot of time in relations with Iran and that, according to him, Tehran should have reached a peace agreement much earlier.
"The US has wasted a lot of time with Iran and I don't think they know what the hell they're doing. These are bad, sick people, and we have to get rid of them. They're a cancer. They're a cancer. And you know what you do? You have to get rid of the cancer early," Trump said.
Asked by reporters in Ankara whether the ceasefire between the US and Iran could be considered over, Trump replied: "It's a very interesting question. To me, I think it's over. I don't want to deal with them anymore."
He added that he will consult with the American negotiating team, but hinted that he no longer sees value in continuing the dialogue.
"As far as I'm concerned, it's over. I'll talk to our negotiators, they want to negotiate. As far as I'm concerned, it's just a waste of time to deal with them," Trump said.
On June 17, the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding that provided for a cessation of fighting between the two countries and a 60-day period of negotiations to reach a final peace agreement.
However, overnight the US military launched a series of attacks on Iranian targets, which, according to Washington, were in response to the attack on merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
