The great wave of arrival of Albanians by rafts during 2022 was used by the former secretary of internal affairs Suela Braverman, for political rhetoric in the English parliament, with strong anti-Albanian doses.
Two years later, the panorama of Albanians who arrived by raft, according to Home Office figures, is negligible compared to other nationalities.
If in 2022 13,700 Albanians arrived by raft, the following year the number went to 900.
Top Channel has tried to provide the data of those who arrived by dinghy during the period January-April 2024. Of the 8,000 people who crossed the English Channel by dinghy during these four months, only 20 of them were Albanians.
A negligible figure for British authority, turning Albania from the anti-Albanian rhetoric of Suela Braverman into a success case of how to prevent illegal immigration, widely mentioned by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
There are three factors why Albanians have said goodbye to arriving by raft on the English island.
First, the agreement between the two governments in London that received the blessing of Rishi Sunak and Edi Rama in March 2023.
Secondly, changing the immigration law, where Albania was established as a safe country without the right to seek asylum.
Thirdly, the year-on-year increasing number of Albanians deported by weekly charter flights England-Albania.
The figures provided by Top Channel show that for the period March 2023-March 2024, 5,976 Albanians were deported from England without a residence permit, including those who completed their sentences in English prisons.
Home Office figures show that 2,419 were deported during 2023, while in 2022 the number was 1,940./TCH
