Lawyer Dorian Matlija has shown how journalists often face various challenges during the exercise of their profession.
He said that despite coming out last in the report, the situation of media freedom in Albania is much worse, since what appears in the report are only the rare cases that are made public.
He showed that the suppression of media freedom comes in waves, according to him, journalists are first tried to be bought, then they are slandered, they are taken to court and recently those who have resisted face threats of physical violence or even worse. .
"Today there are more hybrid forms to attack a journalist. At first it is tried to be seduced and bought, some resist. Those who resist can be put under the pressure of a small sanction, if they don't get a favor, a permit or something, some tax audit comes, it escalates.
Some may still resist. They go further, they slander the journalist, to damage the reputation, you say the journalist is a liar, and for this they attack several portals in parallel. I have several cases like this, which has been deliberately defamed against journalists, such as Artan Rama, Alice Taylor, the British journalist working in Albania, Ylli Rakipi. But some resist even this kind of attack.
Then they go to court. Someone still resists. In this case, it goes to extremes, threats, physical violence, there was also a Kalashnikov incident. Internationals look at the report, but the situation is even worse. All three institutions are against media freedom", the lawyer told Euronews Albania.
