The international news agency Reuters has paid attention to the protest held on Friday by the Democratic Party in Tirana, reporting on clashes between police and opposition supporters.

According to Reuters, police used tear gas and water cannon after some protesters threw petrol bombs and fireworks towards the office of Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Political tensions have been rising since December, when a special prosecutor’s unit filed charges against Deputy Prime Minister Balluku for alleged interference in public tenders for major infrastructure projects and favoritism towards certain companies. She has denied the charges.

Thousands of Democratic Party supporters chanted slogans against the prime minister and carried national and party flags. The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, declared that “Edi Rama’s days are numbered” and that those responsible would face the law , Reuters writes.

An anti-corruption court has suspended Balluku from office, while the Special Prosecution Office has asked parliament to lift her immunity to allow for her arrest. Reuters points out that Prime Minister Rama's Socialist Party, which secured a fourth consecutive mandate last year, has a stable parliamentary majority and it remains unclear if and when a vote on lifting immunity will be held.

" Prime Minister Rama has previously expressed concerns about what he considers excessive judicial powers, particularly in relation to pre-trial detention. Albania aims to join the European Union by 2030, while the EU has stressed that the country must intensify efforts in the fight against crime and corruption ," concludes "Reuters".
