Bad weather in Gjirokastra

The situation following heavy rainfall and flooding in the Gjirokastra region continues to gradually improve, despite ongoing problems on the ground.

The weather today is mostly clear and temperatures have dropped significantly, although light rainfall and the risk of landslides remain possible in some areas.

In the municipality of Gjirokastër , the Qafës e Çajupi road continues to be blocked, where today the contractor and emergency teams will work to open it. The municipality is also continuing the works to remove waste and inert materials in the Dunavat and Manalat neighborhoods of the city, as well as in the Sopot stream in the village of Lazarat to improve traffic. In the area of the village of Nokovë in Lunxhëri, the roads still appear problematic, due to the terrain after the recent rainfall.

Even in the Libohova municipality , the entrances to the villages of Zhej, Lliar and Topovë in the Zagori Administrative Unit continue to be blocked due to landslides, while local authorities are assessing the possibilities of intervention on the ground, due to unstable soil formations.

In the municipality of Memaliaj , an internal road continues to remain blocked, isolating several homes, while in the village of Tosk-Martalloz in the Luftinjë Administrative Unit there are areas where landslides threaten a residential house, but the intervention of vehicles due to the difficult terrain is impossible. In the Krahës Administrative Unit, in the village of Levan, repeated landslides are being recorded. While in the municipality of Dropull no major problems are reported, in Përmet, works are continuing to clean the soil in the upper part of the Sede neighborhood of the city, as part of the municipality's plan to improve infrastructure after the rainfall.

In the Këlcyrë municipality, the road in the village of Luar, Sukë Administrative Unit, is blocked by soil, while the road in the village of Psar in the Ballaban unit is also blocked by landslides, where cleaning work will begin as soon as the water level in the river decreases.

In the Tepelena area , several rural axes such as Salari–Nivicë, Dukaj–Sinanaj, as well as segments of the old Subash–Hormovë road and the cemetery road in the Qendër Administrative Unit are inaccessible due to continuous landslides and numerous water flows. However, on the Tepelena–Gjirokastër axis near Shkalla e Zezë, cleaning works continue and traffic is being carried out in an organized lane under the direction of the traffic police.

Electricity supply throughout the region is mostly normal, with the exception of some feeders in the Memaliaj area, where OSHEE teams are on the ground restoring service.

From a hydrological perspective, the level of the Vjosa River in Memaliaj is around 3.5 meters, and the responsible structures are continuously monitoring it to prevent sudden increases in water levels. The floods that have affected several regions, including Gjirokastra, have also forced evacuations and increased intervention by the Ministry of Defense and the armed forces, which have deployed more than 100 personnel and vehicles to manage the situation in various areas of the country, including Gjirokastra and Durrës.

Local authorities remind citizens to move with caution and follow official announcements for any changes in the situation, while work to clean and restore normal road traffic continues intensively today throughout the region.
