"Danger from crime and drug gangs", the US lists Albania among 13

US warns of 'targeted violence linked to illegal drug networks and organized crime across the country'

The United States of America has listed 13 European countries that are considered worrying destinations for American citizens choosing to spend their holidays in Europe.

Among the countries listed on what is considered the 'shameful list' is Albania, which, based on the classification, is included in risk group 2, out of the 4 groups that the State Department classifies countries based on risk.

In an article, the German media analyzes one by one all the European countries that, according to American authorities, are dangerous due to criminal gangs, drug trafficking networks, terrorist groups or attacks by specific individuals, considering these countries as a "constant threat".

The US's four-level warning system ranges from Level 1 (Normal Precautions) to Level 4 (Do Not Travel).

Germany has a Level 2 terrorism threat rating. "Terrorist groups and lone actors remain a constant threat in Germany and Europe," the official warning said.

US authorities specifically warn of attacks “with knives, small arms, improvised explosive devices and vehicle attacks.” Tourist attractions, transportation hubs such as airports and train stations, shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, places of worship, educational institutions and major sporting or cultural events are particularly at risk.

Italy, one of the most popular travel destinations for Americans, was also placed on Level 2. "There is a risk of terrorist violence," the State Department warns. According to US authorities, tourist attractions, transportation hubs and shopping malls are particularly at risk.

The US also warns of the dangers of traveling to the Alps. According to the US State Department, one of the most dangerous places in Switzerland is the famous St. Moritz in the Engadine.

Belgium and the Netherlands are on the list for similar reasons. "Terrorists may attack with little or no warning," both warnings say. Targets include the full spectrum of public places, from markets and hotels to parks and schools.

Sweden and Denmark, traditionally considered safe travel destinations, also receive Level 2 warnings solely due to the risk of terrorism. "Terrorist groups continue to plan possible attacks," is the warning for both Scandinavian countries. The US recommends special caution in "crowded public places."

The United Kingdom has been downgraded from Level 1 to Level 2 in September 2024. In addition to the general terrorist risk, the US warns of "isolated violence from dissident groups in Northern Ireland", which is "mainly focused on police and military targets".

France is also on the Level 2 list, but for two reasons. In addition to the risk of terrorism, the US also warns of "civil unrest." "Terrorist groups continue to plan possible attacks in France," the assessment says. Peaceful demonstrations can "involve violence and property damage on rare occasions."

Spain receives the same dual warning for terrorism and civil unrest. US authorities stress that demonstrations are "frequent" and can occur in response to political or economic issues. Travelers should "avoid demonstrations and crowds" and monitor local media.

But not all European countries on the Tier 2 list are under surveillance due to terrorism. Serbia is included in this group due to violence related to organized crime.

Albania is on the list for similar reasons. The US warns of "targeted violence linked to illegal drug networks and organized crime throughout the country". Law enforcement's ability to protect travelers is limited "in some areas, particularly in remote regions".

But there are also two European countries that are included in Level 4 security, where American citizens are recommended not to travel.

Belarus is blacklisted due to "arbitrary enforcement of local laws, risk of arrest, continued support for Russia's war against Ukraine, and potential for civil unrest." US citizens in Belarus are advised to "depart immediately."

And this group also includes Ukraine due to the risk of war that has been going on for 3 years as a result of the Russian invasion.

What does the US travel warning level mean?

Level 1 – Take normal precautions: Normal precautions sufficient, minimal risks

Level 2 – Exercise increased caution: Increased risks, extra care required

Level 3 – Reconsider travel: Serious safety risks, reconsider travel

Level 4 – Do not travel: Absolute travel ban, extremely dangerous    /Pamphlet/
