Belgian minister pardons Albanian man who stole her apartment, facing 1 year in
Zuhal Demir

An Albanian is facing a 1-year prison sentence and a fine of 1,600 euros for forcibly entering the home of Flemish minister Zuhal Demir in the city of Genk on January 7, 2023. He was discovered thanks to DNA traces found in a money box.

The thief climbed over the fence and forced his way in through the window. "He ransacked the entire house and stole 50 euros from a savings box," the prosecutor said this Monday morning during a hearing at the Tongeren court.

The Albanian can be linked to the incident through DNA evidence. He has previously been convicted of similar crimes committed in January and February 2024, for which he has already been sentenced to 3 years in prison. He is also known in Germany and Spain. The Tongeren prosecutor who requested the sentence and fine said: “When a burglary occurs in your family home, it significantly affects your sense of security.”

The Albanian, whose name has not been released, was released on bail last month and has since returned to Albania. Because he is banned from entering Europe, he was not present in court on Monday during the hearing.

His lawyer requested a simple guilty verdict or inclusion in his previous sentence, given the similar criminal offenses. She also raised the issue of exceeding a reasonable time limit.

“He came from Albania to Belgium as a painter looking for work. That plan failed, but he encountered unwanted friends here, ending up in burglary. In the meantime, he has gotten his life back on track in Albania. He lives there with his family and works. It is not in anyone’s best interest to send him back from Albania to Belgium for an additional prison sentence,”   she said.

The minister has not filed a civil lawsuit, and the decision will be issued on January 5.
