Hearing at the Criminal Court, Ilir Beqaj comes out of the glass cage
Former Minister of Health, Beqaj, during the trial at the GJKKO

Ilir Beqaj, the former Minister of Health, who is facing a trial at the GJKKO, following SPAK's accusations, will no longer be sitting in the glass cage in the courtroom. The GJKKO has accepted Beqaj's request to sit next to his lawyer, while the former minister is under the security measure of 'prison arrest' since July 4, 2024.

Getting out of the cage can also be called the first 'victory' that Beqaj has achieved since the moment he was arrested, while he has requested several times to change the security measure, but his requests have been rejected by the courts.

The detention of defendants in a glass cage while in prison has sparked a debate not only among lawyers but also in politics. Ilir Meta and Erion Veliaj have requested to be tried outside the glass cage, but so far their requests have been rejected by the Court. It is not known whether the acceptance of the former Minister of Health's request could set another standard in courtrooms, especially for people who are not considered dangerous.

Ilir Beqaj is accused of five criminal offenses, "passive corruption", "violation of equality in tenders", "forgery of documents", "fraud" in collaboration and "failure to declare assets".

Beqaj was among the first high-ranking officials to face SPAK and then arrest.
