In this preliminary hearing, the GJKKO is expected to determine whether or not the file submitted by SPAK should proceed to trial.
In the previous session, which was postponed at the request of the lawyers, SPAK's chief prosecutor, Altin Dumani, presented a 50-page document, requesting that the case be sent to trial.
On the other hand, the party defending businessman Elman Abule, one of the defendants, requested the dismissal of the case, or alternatively a summary trial. While the lawyers of the other persons requested time to express their views.
Mayor Veliaj has asked the GJKKO to provide him with a physical copy of the file so that he can prepare for his defense.
Veliaj claims that he was not allowed to read a single page from the file and that the USB that was handed over to the lawyers cannot be used in the Durrës detention center.
The mayor of Tirana is accused by SPAK of several criminal offenses such as money laundering, failure to declare assets, passive corruption in 9 episodes, abuse of office, and bringing prohibited items into the cell.
Veliaj won a battle in the Constitutional Court regarding the procedures followed for his dismissal from the position of Mayor. Two weeks ago, the Constitutional Court ruled that Veliaj's dismissal, orchestrated by Prime Minister Edi Rama, was illegal. Under such conditions, Veliaj was granted the right to maintain the function of Mayor, despite the fact that he has been under arrest for 9 months.
Following the Constitutional Court's decision, Prime Minister Edi Rama changed his stance regarding the Mayor, asking the Court to judge the request for his release from prison in the same manner.
