The trial against former Defense Minister Fatmir Mediu, accused of abuse of office in two cases related to the Gërdec tragedy, has begun at the Special Court.

During the hearing, Mediu presented objections regarding the technical-military expertise act.

"The experts called by the prosecution were at a low military level. During the process, several senior military officials opposed these experts. In this courtroom, the prosecutor stated that he had no knowledge of calibers because he was a lawyer. Criminal proceedings were deliberately initiated by the then Prosecutor's Office against the Minister of Defense. The Minister does not deal with military matters. Responsibility for these matters belongs to the Chief of General Staff and the military staff. The Minister of Defense is a civilian,"  Mediu said in the session.

Fatmir Mediu is accused of abuse of office, as according to SPAK, the procedures for establishing the dismantling factory in Gërdec, near a residential area, as well as those for ammunition, were violated.

Mediu has denied the charges and the findings of the experts. His trial has been ongoing since April 2023. The reopening of the case was set in motion after 12 years at the initiative of the Durda family, one of the victims of the explosion on March 15, 2008, in the premises of the former "Tank Brigade", where 26 people lost their lives and hundreds of others were injured.
