The US has issued various warnings that Albania is at risk from attacks by Iran or groups linked to Tehran. The warnings were addressed to American citizens visiting Albania or currently in our country, even advising them to be cautious in certain areas.
Then it was the American media that sounded the same alarm, referring to official announcements, while many tourists may wonder how safe a trip to Albania is?
According to German media outlet baden24.de, Albania has been considered an up-and-coming holiday destination for years. However, in recent days, reports have been circulating that are causing concern among potential travelers. The term "travel warning" is doing the rounds, and anyone planning a vacation to Albania is rightly wondering: what is the truth?
The alarm was sounded by Washington. The US Embassy in Tirana issued a so-called "security alert" for Albania in early April 2026. The US media picked up on the news. Since then, there has been considerable uncertainty, including among German tourists.
The US warns of possible threats from groups close to Iran near American facilities, but also in tourist areas, hotels and shopping centers. The main cause for the US alarm is the presence of the Iranian opposition group "People's Mujahedin" (MEK), which has been headquartered in Albania since 2013.
For Tehran, the “People’s Mujahedin” are a constant source of conflict. In 2022, Iran attacked Albania’s state infrastructure with a cyberattack. Tirana subsequently severed diplomatic relations with Tehran. Albanian authorities have since thwarted several planned attacks on the MEK camp.
The U.S. Department of State has maintained its "Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution" rating for Albania since December 2024, indicating heightened caution due to overall crime risks.
But the German Federal Foreign Office has not issued a travel warning for Albania. As of April 23, 2026, only general travel and safety advice applies.
These include recommendations to be careful at demonstrations in Tirana and warnings about increased pickpocketing during the summer months, especially on beaches, writes German media . According to it, there is no recommendation from the authorities to refrain from traveling to Albania.
For German tourists, this means that Albania, Europe's hidden paradise, is generally open for travel in 2026. However, according to German media, it is advisable to pay attention to the travel guidelines issued by the German Federal Foreign Office and to remain vigilant in everyday life.
"Currently, nothing prevents you from spending your holidays on the Adriatic coast, provided you are aware of the surrounding environment," the article says. /Adapted from Pamphlet /
