Veliaj's hearing postponed due to lawyers' boycott

The preliminary hearing for the former mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, has been postponed again.

It is learned that the reason was the lawyers' non-appearance due to the boycott. The next session was scheduled for October 28 at 10:00.

On October 2, the Supreme Court rejected Erion Veliaj's appeal, which sought to replace the personal security measure of "prison arrest" with a milder measure.

Veliaj was arrested on February 10 after being accused of, together with his wife Ajola Xoxa, building a complex corruption and money laundering scheme to illegally benefit from the capital's municipality funds and bribes from businessmen, its contractors, using a network of companies and non-profit organizations.

According to SPAK, Mayor Veliaj and his wife benefited from around 1 million euros from this corrupt scheme, money that was mainly used for luxury online purchases by Ajola Xoxa.

On September 11, the process of dismissing Veliaj from the position of Mayor began, while Prime Minister Edi Rama took special care to ensure that the process was concluded quickly and that Tirana went to early elections. Within two weeks, all dismissal procedures were exhausted, while President Bajram Begaj was proposed a vacancy in the Municipality of Tirana, in order to set a date for holding the elections.

On the other hand, Veliaj has opposed the procedures with an appeal to the Constitutional Court, which is expected to rule on October 31 whether or not the mayor's dismissal is constitutional and legal.
