Erjol Haxhiu, Imam at the New Pazar Mosque and Director of the Muslim Community of Albania, spoke out against the polygamous life of the doctor Dervish Hasi, who cohabited with 3 women and had intercourse with a 16-year-old.
Haxhiu said that in Albania every Imam who will perform a religious wedding must present the couple with the marriage certificate from the state institution.
The theologian added that he personally does not believe that the justice mentioned in the Koran, as a basic condition for having 2 or more wives, is achieved.
"As an Imam and a theologian, I don't think that justice is achieved which is a fundamental condition in the Holy Qur'an to allow marriage with two, three or four wives. Once upon a time, marriages performed by imams were also recognized by the state and served as a kind of state registry. This is not current. As a result, we have a condition from the Muslim Community of Albania that has been sent to all theologians that before entering into a religious marriage they require an official celebration from the state. You marry, but in case they have a dispute with each other, you have no power to bring justice where it should be" , said Haxhiu.
