The former mufti of Tirana, Ylli Gurra, has spoken out against the draft law on gender equality, describing it as an attempt to impose values on Albania that conflict with tradition and national identity.
Gurra said that such highly sensitive issues should be addressed through a referendum, where citizens can decide for themselves.
"If the loss of family sovereignty is imposed on Albanian society in the name of integration, why do we need the European Union?" he declared on the "Off the Record" show on A2CNN.
Gurra stressed that he is not against development, but against any form of imposition that, according to him, “does not reflect the will of the majority of Albanians.” He warned that “the sun of Europe is setting,” referring to the loss of traditional values in some Western countries.
The former mufti also recalled the history of religious persecution in Albania, saying that the Albanian people have sacrificed much for freedom of religion and family, so they should not accept a model that reformats human anthropology.
