Medical students against the new law: Wrong, it would be a victory if we

Medical students at the public university are not optimistic about the reduction of years of forced labor in Albania after graduation.

The government changed the law after the Constitutional Court decision and reduced the employment terms from five to three for first-year students, from three to two years for second- to fourth-year students, and for fifth- and sixth-year students in a year, but future doctors say that their intention was to remove this obligation.

"It's not that we are very optimistic and that's why we weren't in favor of these years from the beginning, nor the reduction of years, removal was our goal. For us, it would be a victory if we dialogued. It would be a victory if we were not forced to work here, but encouraged to work here. So I think it's a small victory and more discussion is needed" , the students told ABC News.

"It seems to me more or less like it was simple, the duration has changed by a year since I saw it. Personally, it does not bother me that I have chosen to stay in Albania, but in fact for the students who have been very engaged with this issue, in my opinion, not much has changed from what it was" , the students emphasize.

Students of General Medicine who opposed the bill with protests through a statement distributed to the media express their regret for being ignored for the second time in its drafting.

The draft submitted for public consultation, according to them, does not fill the legal gap for employment criteria and that they are consulting with the legal team for the necessary judicial steps.

"The bill seems wrong to us, however we will discuss it with the lawyer, most likely we will continue it as a battle. It's the same thing, just a different wording, we don't agree, what to say, the victory is not absolute, the state has its own powers" , said the students.

The amended draft law provides for the employment of a young doctor in one of the public health institutions where there is a need within three months from the end of the university.

When the employment is not realized for reasons beyond the doctor's control until the opportunity for employment is created, he must be paid 80% of the general practitioner's salary for 9 months.

At the end of the public consultation at the end of May, this draft will be passed to the parliamentary committees for review.
