Watercraft owners in Ksamil protested today in front of the Saranda Municipality, opposing the proposal to establish four bases for their activity during the tourist season.
The protest took place in parallel with the Saranda Municipal Council meeting, where the agenda included the review and approval of maps of watercraft bases in the municipality. The situation became tense when a group of protesters attempted to enter the meeting room, demanding a meeting with the mayor.
According to business representatives, two of the four proposed bases are not suitable for the development of activity. They argue that their positioning on the outskirts of Ksamil makes them practically unusable.
"The idea is that the designated bases should be practical. Two of them are out of order, they are in corners of Ksamil that are not used for anything. The two that are there can make people feel uneasy," said one of the protesters.
On the other hand, the municipality representative stated that before drafting the proposal, several meetings were held with interest groups and that a compromise solution was sought between the operators' requests and the recommendations of security institutions.
"For this purpose, several meetings have been held. Interest groups have been listened to and we have concluded in the proposal and map that we have brought to you today for voting. The Police have requested that there be only two moving cordons, while previously there were 12. We have found a middle ground and have proposed four of them," she said.
A police officer present at the meeting also spoke in support of this position, emphasizing that the safety of citizens and vacationers remains the priority.
"We aim at people's lives, the safety of citizens. In the communication we have had with the municipality and the Municipal Police, we have agreed that there will be four. With four of these, we are safer. Then, where they will be placed, the businesses themselves choose. We are there to secure the part of the station where the vehicles will enter and exit," the officer declared.
The debate between tourism operators and local institutions is expected to continue, as the parties remain divided on the most appropriate way to organize watercraft activity in Ksamil during the summer season.
