"The Telegraph" about the Rama-Meloni pact: Albania rejected Britain,

Britain "backed off" from Italy in trying to negotiate a Rwanda-style migrant deal with Albania.

Earlier this year, ministers revived the idea of a deal with Albania under which it would accept migrants from Great Britain to have their asylum claims examined in the Balkan state.

"The Telegraph" has published an article on this issue. But according to them, this idea cooled after discussions between the Foreign Office and the British embassy in Tirana.

However, this agreement was undermined when Rome revealed its agreement with Albania to house asylum seekers arriving on Italy's Mediterranean coast, as Italy reviews its asylum procedures.

According to a Telegraph source, the Foreign Office itself was surprised by this news, even though it is known that Italy has an exceptional relationship with Albania.

"The Foreign Office was surprised when it happened, although Italy has an exceptional relationship with Albania for historical reasons," said a source.

However, another source revealed that an agreement was discussed between Albania and Britain for the processing of migrants in the open sea, but that did not continue.

According to the Telegraph, Britain held talks with Albania in 2021 on offshore migrants, but they collapsed after the report was proposed in the UK.

Ambassador Qirjako Qirko said that he would never accept the opening of such processing centers for illegal immigrants.

While in November of this year, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced the agreement for the construction of detention centers in Albania.

In the tripartite meetings with Melon and Sunak at the weekend, Rama said that several other European countries had requested a similar agreement, but "we said no", reports the British, who further quotes the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, that "Italy was a case special because of the close historical and cultural ties between the two countries".

"But we said no. It is always an honor to help when Italy asks us to lend a hand and it is a privilege to be considered a special friend of Italy", said Rama.

Britain's efforts to avert deportation flights to Rwanda from June 2022. The government has considered and rejected UK territories such as the Falkland Islands and Ascension Island, but is understood to have held talks with other African countries about the possibility of Rwanda-style agreements.

The Home Secretary, James Cleverly, told MPs in late November that more countries were lining up to follow Rwanda in taking asylum seekers from the UK, if the scheme can work.
