Greek Minister Nikos Dendias and Albanian counterpart Ermal Nufi agree on immediate meeting of expert committee

The issue of the cemeteries of Greek soldiers who fell during World War II has once again come into focus during the official visit to Tirana of the Minister of National Defense of Greece, Nikos Dendias.

The Minister of Defense of the Republic of Albania, Ermal Nufi, hosted his Greek counterpart this Monday at the premises of the Ministry of Defense, where the focus of the meeting was on bilateral relations in the field of defense, cooperation within NATO, as well as regional and international developments.

However, one of the most sensitive topics of discussion was the issue of the cemeteries of Greek soldiers, 82 years after the end of World War II.

After the meeting, Greek Minister Nikos Dendias announced that the parties have agreed to the immediate convening of the Joint Commission of Experts on Military Cemeteries.

" During the meeting with my Albanian counterpart, Ermal Nufi, we agreed on the immediate convening of the Joint Commission of Experts on Military Cemeteries ," Dendias declared.

The issue of Greek soldiers who fell on Albanian territory during the Italo-Greek war has been one of the most delicate topics in relations between the two countries over the years. Athens has continuously requested the identification and arrangement of the graves of its soldiers, while official Tirana has treated the issue within the framework of bilateral agreements and international standards.

The meeting between the two ministers comes at a time when Albania and Greece have intensified political contacts and cooperation within the framework of regional security and NATO structures.
