Greek journalist Spiros Sideris commented on the visit of the Greek Minister of Defense to Tirana and said that the maritime issue is being used more for political consumption than to reach a concrete agreement.
During a live broadcast for Euronews Albania, Greek journalist Spiros Sideris spoke about the visit that Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias made to Tirana this Monday. One of the topics expected to be discussed between the parties remains the maritime border agreement between Albania and Greece.
Sideris described the issue as very complicated and said that he currently sees no real will from both governments to find a final solution.
"I think this is a very complicated issue of the sea. I need to clarify a little about Greek politics and the politics of this government: they create a lot of stories just for the internal opinion. He asked for the signing of the agreement to take the issue to The Hague, but he has not insisted and has not done anything to take it to The Hague. If the issue should go to The Hague, he should, like dancing the tango, talk to the Albanian side about this issue and create the conditions for the parties to take it. For the moment, this is just a political game and nothing else," the Greek journalist said.
He also recalled the negotiations held several years ago between former Albanian Foreign Minister Ditmir Bushati and former Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias, saying that at that time the parties had been close to an agreement.
"I believe that in 2018, if I'm not mistaken, Ditmir Bushati and Nikos Kotzias were very close to reaching this agreement, but I don't know who ruined this chance. I think it's better to reach a bilateral agreement and not go to The Hague, because we never know what The Hague Court may decide on this issue. It's better not to play games with such important issues," he declared.
Asked by journalist Thimi Samarxhiu whether Albania and Greece could reach an agreement on the maritime issue themselves, Sideris expressed skepticism and said that according to him, the parties have no political interest in closing this debate.
"No, I don't think so. I believe it's because both governments want to prolong the bilateral differences just for political reasons. They don't want to find a solution, so I find it difficult. I think we need someone else to do this, someone like the United States to push the parties to reach an agreement," he said.
Following his statement, the Greek journalist also commented on the US approach to international relations, mentioning the Trump administration.
"I believe that the United States with the Trump government is interested in business, not politics or diplomacy. If you agree to do business with them, then they support you. Otherwise, they reject you. Currently, I do not believe that anything like this will be signed ," Sideris concluded.
