On the eve of the start of the new academic year, the ranking of universities in Southern Europe has been published.
Although there are over 40 institutions of higher education in our country, only 4 universities are included in the list, the University of Tirana, the University of Durres, the Polytechnic University and the Agricultural University of Tirana. The University of Tirana is ranked 677th, 10 places away from the bottom.
" For a few years, the World University Ranking has included four Albanian public universities (UT, UAMD, UPT, UBT) in the ranking. It turns out that 4 Albanian Universities fall 200 places from last year's ranking. In our Universities, friendship has prevailed over meritocracy, interests over integrity and politics over science. Meanwhile, the best universities in the Region are 3 Serbian universities, 2 Universities of Bosnia, 1 Macedonian ", says Migen Qiraxhiu, Civic Centre.
Albanian universities out of 688 universities in total are ranked: University of Durrës i 606; Polytechnic University of 658.
"This is an unprecedented failure for Tirana and other universities as well, when we compare that in 2021 these universities were ranked in the 301-350 band and in 2022 between 350-400. The Civic Center assesses that this positioning of Albanian universities is related to their approach to education, they invest more in the offices of the holders than in scientific equipment, recruit staff based on friendship and not meritocracy, pay guards more than scientific projects, and in two in recent years there have been substantial problems with the academic, political and legal reputation of their holders. Albanian universities must undergo academic, administrative and financial vetting, to clean them from corruption, nepotistic recruitment and unfair scientific advancements, otherwise in the coming years we will not find them at all in these international rankings", he said
