Lawyer Brizida Gjikondi says that Ilir Meta and Sali Berisha are no longer impunity, referring to the statement of the head of the Special Prosecutor's Office (SPAK), Altin Dumani, about ongoing investigations into cases involving family members of former presidents.
In an interview for ABC News, Gjikondi said that a different standard is being seen, since before high state figures and their families were untouchable.
According to Gjikondi, the US has given support and encouragement to SPAK.
" For the first time, the standard of proceeding of high-ranking figures of the Albanian state, who have always been invulnerable, is changing. Include here, the family of former president Meta, include here, Berisha's family. If they become vulnerable and are equal citizens of this country, there is hope for all Albanians and there is hope that those who have been corrupt, part of the corrupt system in this country, will be prosecuted.
For the first time we are seeing a different standard. We must be realistic, it is also to the credit of the United States of America. I have the impression that yesterday's visit of the high US official was more of a message for the Albanians. All the time, we have a US presence in SPAK offices.
It is known that this support given by the USA to Mr. Dumani and his vision, without doing 10 months, Mr. Dumani has such a tangible and optimistic result for Albanians without distinction", she emphasized .
