Erion Veliaj's trial postponed / Lawyer Ndreca: They are not giving him the opportunity to defend himself
The trial of the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, and 29 other defendants has been postponed to Friday at 09:00. Veliaj was not present at today's hearing and was represented by his lawyer, Plarent Ndreca.
Ajola Xoxa also did not physically attend the hearing, being represented by her lawyers. Present in the courtroom were the two prosecutors in the case, Ols Dado and Altin Dumani.
A day ago, the Special Court decided to repeal the security measures "obligation to appear" and "ban on leaving the country" for Ajola Xoxa.
The request for the lifting of these measures was submitted by Xoxa herself, who argued that her health condition, due to pregnancy, requires the possibility of moving abroad.
Erion Veliaj has been in the security measure of "prison arrest" since February 10, 2025. The Special Prosecution Office (SPAK) has filed 13 charges against him, including: passive corruption, money laundering, failure to declare assets, abuse of office, and bringing prohibited items into prison.
According to SPAK, the majority of the accusations are related to passive corruption, suspected in 9 cases, where it is alleged that Veliaj has benefited from monetary sums and real estate from various companies, which then received construction permits and public funds from the Municipality of Tirana.
Ajola Xoxa also faces charges of passive corruption in 9 cases. According to SPAK, these are related to relationships with commercial entities and non-profit organizations.
Meanwhile, after the end of today's session, lawyer Plarent Ndreca told the media that 'the mayor of Tirana is not being given the opportunity to defend himself.' He explained that Veliaj did not appear at today's session as he is still familiarizing himself with the file.
SPAK decision executed/ Jorgo Goro returns to prison
The former mayor of Himara, Jorgo Goro, has returned to prison to serve the remainder of his sentence, seven months after his release from prison. Yesterday evening, he appeared at the Vlora Police Station, where the security measure "arrest with prison" was executed.
His return to solitary confinement comes after a final decision of the Special Appeals Court of the Criminal Court of Kosovo, which upheld his sentence.
The appeal confirmed the 2-year prison sentence for Goro, which due to the shortened trial had been reduced to 1 year and 4 months. After calculating the time spent in detention, the Special Prosecution Office (SPAK) has estimated that the former mayor still has 6 months and 10 days to serve.
The case relates to the alienation of a property in the Livadha area, for which Goro was initially convicted by the Special Court on July 30, 2025.
Previously, Goro had served 17 months in prison from another sentence of 2 years and 20 days, in connection with the alienation of about 10 thousand square meters of land in the Gjileka area, Himara. In this case too, he received a reduced sentence due to the shortened trial and was released after completing the period of service.
Winter returns to Korça/ Snow reaches up to 25 centimeters in villages
The mountainous areas of Korça region have been covered in snowfall again in early April, temporarily returning to the typical winter landscape and conditions, even though the country is officially in spring. This phenomenon is not unusual for high mountain areas, where temperatures remain low and snowfall can return even after the onset of spring, creating a contrast between the calendar and the climatic reality on the ground.
Tourist villages such as Dardha and Boboshtica continue to offer winter views, which attract visitors, while on the Boboshtica-Dardhe road axis the snow thickness reaches up to 20-25 centimeters, making traffic difficult in some segments.
Currently, contractors are engaged in the field to clean and salt the roads, with the aim of keeping the roads passable and ensuring safety for drivers traveling in this area.
KLSH: Albania is emptying/ Government policies only on paper
Albania is losing population at an alarming rate, while public policies remain fragmented and often only on paper. An audit by the Supreme Audit Office (KLSH) reveals a lack of strategy, poor use of funds, and symbolic measures that do not address the economic reality of families. Amid worrying projections and unclear interventions, the country faces a demographic crisis without clear direction.
On paper, Albania has plans, strategies and documents that aim to address one of the country’s most serious challenges: an aging and shrinking population. In practice, according to a recent audit by the Supreme Audit Office (SAO), these policies often remain fragmented, uncoordinated and, in many cases, disconnected from reality.
The audit, which covers the period 2020–2025, sheds light on a deep gap between demographic developments and institutional response. As the country faces a continuing population decline, public institutions are left without an integrated approach and a single national strategy that comprehensively addresses the phenomenon.
