Former military pedagogue Ylli Mici has shed light on the origins of the military organization of the Kosovar resistance, revealing the secret order of 1991 that brought the first groups of volunteers to Albania, including Adem Jashari.
In an interview for "Dritare Tv", Mici said that everything started in the fall of 1991, a period when Albania was at a historical crossroads between the fall of the communist regime and the fragility of the nascent pluralism.
However, despite the internal chaos, the defense structures took on a clear national task.
The order to begin the exercises came directly from the President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Ramiz Alia.
Mici explains that this decision followed a historic and discreet meeting between Alija and Kosovo leader Ibrahim Rugova in Tirana. The goal was clear: to prepare a resistance force that would be capable of protecting the civilian population in Kosovo, given that war had already broken out in Croatia and Slovenia, and the risk of a similar scenario in Kosovo was imminent.
At the Military Academy (United Officers' School), the order was conveyed by the school commander to the heads of departments. Mici reports that everything was treated as a state secret of the highest level. Nine professors, among the best in their respective fields, were selected to train a group of 106 volunteer boys. These young men came mainly from Kosovo, but there were also those from the diaspora and the Albanian territories in Macedonia. For Mici and his colleagues, this was not simply a training task, but a patriotic mission that required absolute discretion, since disclosure could bring serious international consequences for Albania.
The interview reveals that the training did not take place in the usual Academy premises, but was moved to a logistics base in Surrel, at the foot of Mount Dajti. This location was chosen to be away from the public eye and to guarantee the security of the operation.
