Austrian media continue to raise questions about the career of Fate Velaj, currently ambassador to Vienna. "FoB" has written another article, focusing on Velaj's education, decorations and appointment. It even goes so far as to state that he has been targeted by SPAK.
A potentially explosive case: The Albanian ambassador to Austria, Fatmir Velaj, is facing a growing number of serious charges. According to Albanian media, he is the focus of the SPAK Anti-Corruption Prosecution Office. His citizenship, academic title and political career are also being targeted by the opposition in Albania. The charges range from abuse of office and forgery to a possible violation of the Austrian Citizenship Act, with far-reaching consequences on both sides of the Adriatic. The presumption of innocence is undoubtedly valid.
Ambassador under SPAK surveillance
The Special Prosecution Office Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) in Albania is reportedly conducting an investigation into Velaj – this is reported by several Albanian media outlets, including the 'Prapaskena' portal. The charges are serious, especially a possible abuse of office in connection with the alleged accommodation of his sister-in-law at the embassy in Vienna despite the fact that there was an arrest warrant against her. If this suspicion were confirmed and were true, the abuse of diplomatic privileges would be difficult to deny.
Dual citizenship: politically explosive, legally delicate
According to FoB research and several Albanian sources, Velaj is said to have been an Austrian and Albanian citizen – during his active time as an advisor and member of several parliamentary committees in Albania (2013-2023).
According to Article 27 of the Austrian Citizenship Act, this is only permitted with express permission, but the editorial team is not aware of any such permission at the moment. If Velaj did not disclose his political activities abroad to the Austrian authorities, this would be of importance under criminal law. This would be considered fraud or obtaining rights through fraud.
Academic title with many open questions
In his official biographies, Velaj lists his studies in “Art and Cultural Management” at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. However, the editorial team has not yet received confirmation of this academic degree.
The question arises in particular about the role of the Albanian University "Kristal", a closed educational institution, whose academic standards have been criticized several times in the past. The path of education in Austria has not yet been fully documented.

Pasojat në Tiranë dhe Vjenë
Koha është shpërthyese: Më 11 maj, Shqipëria do të zgjedhë një parlament të ri. Pas arrestimit spektakolar të kryebashkiakut të Tiranës nga SPAK, Velaj mund të jetë politikani i radhës i lartë që do të vihet në shënjestër të drejtësisë. Edhe kryeministri Edi Rama është nën presion në rritje – Velaj ishte një nga shokët e tij më të ngushtë.
Në Austri, pasojat parlamentare janë tashmë të afërta. Sipas informacioneve të FOB, opozita po punon për një kërkesë drejtuar Ministrisë së Jashtme me pyetjet kryesore:

• A ishin raportuar saktë zyrat politike në Shqipëri?

Përfundim: Një rast me fuqi shpërthyese
Fatmir Velaj është në qendër të një skandali politik transnacional në rritje. Ajo që filloi me imunitetin diplomatik, tani mund të bëhet një çështje ligjore – me pyetje të hapura që prekin njësoj Vjenën dhe Tiranën.
Ajo që e bën çështjen Velaj veçanërisht shpërthyese politikisht është se ishte ish -deputeti i NEOS Helmut Brandstätter ai që e solli atë në arenën parlamentare. Ndërkohë që ai kërkoi sqarime, më shumë pyetje nga redaksia drejtuar drejtuesve të NEOS mbeten pa përgjigje.
Një kontradiktë e jashtëzakonshme: vetë partia që mbështet transparencën mbetet jashtëzakonisht e heshtur për këtë çështje. Transparenca duket se i ka krahët e prerë – të paktën në këtë rast.
Deklarata e Ministrisë së Jashtme
The Foreign Ministry initially responded hesitantly and late to Fass ohne Boden's request. Now, however, the ministry has confirmed the key points of the revelations: The Albanian embassy was indeed informed that dual citizens cannot be accredited as ambassadors in Austria. It also referred to the prohibition provided for in the Vienna Diplomatic Convention on the exercise of commercial activities during a diplomatic mission.
A spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry told Fass ohne Boden: “The Albanian Embassy was informed by the Foreign Ministry that dual citizens are not accredited as ambassadors in Austria. It also referred to the prohibition of exercising a profession or business with a profit-making orientation contained in the Vienna Diplomatic Convention.
"With Prof. Velaj renouncing his Austrian citizenship and ceasing commercial activities in Austria, there was no obstacle to granting approval from the Federal President."
