According to this list, many positions in NGOs have salaries ranging from 187,000 lek to 3.1 million new lek per month, or about 31 thousand euros per month.
A list reflecting the monthly salaries of administrators, executive directors, coordinators and employees in organizations funded by USAID and the Soros Foundation in Albania has been published by the investigative portal 'Boldnews.al'.
The list is published at a time when a fierce conflict has erupted between the administration of US President Donald Trump and the United States Agency for Foreign Assistance (USAID) over how American taxpayer funds have been spent to support civil society projects around the world.
Trump's close associates have heaped harsh epithets on USAID, considering it a "criminal organization" or a "funder of radical left-wing NGOs."
USAID has provided support and funded numerous projects to strengthen Albanian institutions, as well as civil society.
According to this list, many positions in NGOs have salaries ranging from 187,000 lek to 3.1 million new lek per month, or about 31 thousand euros per month.
The Soros Foundation ranks among the highest paid organizations. Soros Foundation Executive Director Andi Dobrushi earns 31,000 euros per month, or about 370,000 USD per year. Other organizations funded by USAID also make significant amounts.
This issue was discussed tonight on the show 'Zonë e Lirë' on MCN TV, where host Arian Çani addressed the topic of these large payments. Suddenly, the show's signal was cut off and the screen remained black for several minutes. After the show resumed, Çani implied that something unusual had happened, but did not provide further details.
This signal interruption has raised questions about its cause, given that it occurred at the very moment when the USAID and Soros Foundation payrolls were being discussed. Such interruptions during the treatment of sensitive topics have always caused public speculation, although so far there is no official information about its cause.
The publication of this list and the unusual interruption during the show once again emphasize the importance of transparency and accountability when it comes to international funds and financing in Albania.
Prapaskena has decided to publish the names of the leaders of the organizations, their respective salaries and their photos, assessing that it constitutes a public interest. Prapaskena will also publish the assets of each of them, without questioning their role in the developments and strengthening of democracy in Albania.
