Deputies live a luxurious life

The millions that put money in your pocket, the reason for the feverish fight to secure a mandate as a deputy...

Albania has entered the election campaign and there is a feverish fight, even within parties, to secure a mandate as an MP. Candidates are fighting hard to enter the Parliament and it is even getting to the point where conflicts have begun even between close people.

But why all this fighting? Why does everyone want to become an MP? Apart from power and political protection, it seems that the main element is the salary. Currently we have MPs who have never worked in their lives. A large part of them do not know what their profession is. Meanwhile, in Parliament they receive a salary of 3 thousand euros per month, not to mention the other benefits that come with the status of an MP.

"Pamphlet" has obtained a report from the Assembly on expenditures for 2024, which reveals that a total of 1,716,307,000 lek were spent during the past year. That's about 17 million euros. Of these, 1,121,648,000 went to the salaries and insurance of MPs. That's over 1 billion new lek or about 11 million euros, just for the salaries that MPs receive.

In 2023, the DP and the SP joined forces and increased the salaries of legislators, but this report also shows a trick that the deputies have done, as by increasing salaries they have also increased benefits from per diems and bonuses.

" These expenses are increasing, as the daily allowance within the country, which is defined in Article 14 of the amended Law "On the Status of the Deputy", is 4% of the salary. With the increase in salary on April 1, 2023, it has had an increasing financial effect on this item as well; the number of committee meetings has been increasing and there have also been investigative and special committees, established by decisions of the Assembly. The average number of deputies in financial relations with the Assembly has also been higher in 2024 ," the report states.

According to the Assembly's analysis, nearly 60 million new lekë have gone to per diems for MPs who have traveled within and outside the country. They have also benefited from reimbursements for fuel, telephone, etc.

" The expenses that account for the largest specific weight in this group of expenses are: the financial benefits of members of parliament, which are sanctioned in the Status of the Deputy and the Assembly Decision 114/2014 "On the treatment of deputies" (reimbursements for telephone expenses, fuel, per diem within the country, honoraria for participation in meetings of parliamentary committees and coverage of housing rent) ", the report emphasizes. /Pamphlet
