An 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck Kamchatka, triggering a tsunami with waves 3 meters high.

People were advised to move to higher ground in numerous places and that the potential danger could last for more than a day, but places where tsunami waves have already made landfall have not reported significant damage so far.

Waves less than a foot (under 30 centimeters) above high tide levels were observed in the Alaskan communities of Amchitka and Adak, said Dave Snider, tsunami warning coordinator at the Alaska National Tsunami Warning Center.

White waves came ashore in Hokkaido, Japan in the north, and Ibaraki and Chiba, just east of Tokyo, in footage broadcast on Japan's public broadcaster NHK.

A tsunami was detected at the port of Ishinomaki in northern Japan, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

That was the highest reading so far among several places around northern Japan. But higher waves were still coming, said Shiji Kiyomoto, an earthquake and tsunami response official at the JMA.

Authorities in the Sakhalin region in Russia's far east have declared a state of emergency in the northern Kuril Islands, where tsunami waves have damaged buildings and caused flooding.

"A state of emergency has been declared in the North Kuril District, where an earthquake and tsunami occurred today," the Sakhalin government said in a statement.

The tsunami has already flooded the city of Severo-Kurilsk, in the northern part of the Russian archipelago known as the Kuril Islands, according to the Russian Emergencies Ministry.

"Today's earthquake was the strongest in decades," said Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov.

"I urge everyone to stay away from the coast in tsunami-prone areas and follow the announcements broadcast on loudspeakers," the governor urged.
