US President Donald Trump has publicly reacted to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, expressing shock at the images of starvation circulating from the Palestinian enclave. During the flight from Scotland to Washington, he told reporters aboard Air Force One that the images of starving children had deeply affected him and First Lady Melania Trump.
"She thinks it's terrible," Trump said, referring to his wife. "She sees the same pictures that you see, that all of us see. And I think, unless someone is very cold-hearted or even worse, crazy, there's nothing else you can say except that it's terrible when you see the children," he added.
The US president added that the situation is alarming and requires urgent intervention: "They are children, you know, whether or not anyone admits that there is hunger there, they are children suffering from hunger."
Trump's statements came just a day after his administration announced plans to create "food hubs" in Gaza, a step seen as distancing itself from the stance of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who had denied the existence of famine in the enclave.
"Those children look very hungry," Trump repeated, underscoring the need for a humanitarian response and signaling to Netanyahu that the US cannot ignore the reality on the ground.
This is one of the rare cases where the US president has publicly expressed disagreement with the Israeli line, suggesting that the US administration is ready to take independent action to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
