Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sharply criticized British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer following the United Kingdom's decision to recognize Palestinian statehood in September if Israel does not end the war in Gaza.
“ This decision rewards Hamas’ monstrous terrorism and punishes its victims. A jihadist state on Israel’s borders today will threaten Britain tomorrow. Policies of appeasement with jihadist terrorists always fail. They will fail for you too. This will not happen ,” he said.
The British Prime Minister's Office (No 10) also released details of an earlier telephone conversation between the two leaders. A Downing Street spokeswoman said Starmer began the conversation by reiterating support for Israel, calling for the release of hostages still being held by Hamas and condemning the terrorist attacks of October 7, 2023.
But Starmer stressed that the humanitarian situation in Gaza has become unacceptable and urged Netanyahu to immediately lift all restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid to the civilian population:
" People there urgently need food and aid, and this cannot wait ," the British prime minister said.
Starmer also presented his Israeli counterpart with the plan to recognize Palestine and held a separate phone call with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who welcomed the decision. He also spoke with the King of Jordan and the Prime Minister of Canada, announcing further talks in the coming days.
