Israeli attack in Gaza, 21 people killed; dozens more are injured

An Israeli airstrike on a camp housing displaced people in southern Gaza killed at least 21 people.

While 28 people were injured in the attack, announced the director of the Nasser hospital, Atif al-Hout, in the city of Han Yunis.

The Israeli military said one of its warplanes struck senior officials of Hamas - the Palestinian group designated as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union - who "were involved in terrorist activities" in the area.

The bodies of at least 15 victims have been taken to Nasser Hospital, but health authorities said it would be difficult to know the exact number of victims, as most of their bodies were mutilated and suffered severe burns.

The air strike hit the area of Muvasi, where there is a camp housing hundreds of thousands of displaced people. Attacks carried out earlier in the day in Gaza killed eight people, including four children, health officials said.

Israel's war against Hamas has devastated large areas of Gaza and displaced 90 percent of the enclave's 2.3 million population several times.

The war began on October 7, 2023, after Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing nearly 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and kidnapping nearly 250 others.

Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed at least 44,500 Palestinians, more than half of them women and children, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.

Israel, without providing evidence, has said that it has killed more than 17,000 militants./REL
