The French government falls. Prime Minister Michel Barnier has not survived the motion of no confidence.
A total of 331 MPs voted in favor of the motion tabled by the leftist NFP alliance, with a majority of 288 needed to force the government out of office.
The result deepens France's political crisis and marks a significant blow to the European Union at a time when Germany is also mired in a parliamentary election campaign until February and weeks before Donald Trump returns to the White House.
Before the vote, Michel Barnier spoke to the MPs. He said France's fiscal difficulties "will not disappear" with a vote of no confidence.
France is struggling to mitigate a massive budget deficit, which is forecast to exceed 6% of national output this year.
Barnier told lawmakers that France was paying billions in interest, warning "this is the reality".
"I wish we had spent more money to make things easier. It's not going to just go away from the glamor of a vote of no confidence. Mark my words, it won't be long before this reality is something which will be faced by any kind of government, any government that will come," he said.
Barnier was warmly applauded by his camp as he spoke. He said he wanted to emphasize what an honor it had been - and still is - to be prime minister.
