A serious incident has shaken the campus of Kentucky State University in Frankfort, USA, where a shooting occurred.
As a result of the shooting, one student lost his life and another is in critical condition.
City police said a suspect, who is not a student at the university, was arrested shortly after the incident. The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon in a dormitory on the south side of campus, and authorities placed the university on lockdown, saying they were responding to an “active aggressor.”
As CNN reports, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear was the first to react, calling the violence unacceptable and calling on citizens to pray for the affected families and KSU students. He thanked law enforcement for their quick response.
Frankfort police, campus police and the Franklin County Sheriff participated in the operation, while local, state and federal authorities are assisting in the investigation. KSU officials said that, out of respect for students and families, they will not release identifying or medical information.
"Out of respect for students and their families, the University will not release additional identifying or medical information at this time," KSU said on its website.
"We are in close contact with the families and are offering them every possible support," the announcement added.
The university has canceled classes, final exams and campus activities for the rest of the week, giving students the opportunity to return home. KSU President Koffi C. Akakpo called the incident a “senseless tragedy” and expressed his grief as a parent for the phone calls he had to make to the victims’ families.
"As a parent myself, I can't imagine getting the call I made to parents today," he said.
Counseling and support services are being provided to affected students, faculty and staff. Alakpo said local, state and federal agencies are now assisting in the investigation.
The KSU campus extends over about 1,000 hectares and has over 2,200 students and 450 academic and administrative staff.
