A serious incident has shaken the Italian capital. A 23-year-old woman was raped near the Jonio metro station, in the northeastern area of Rome, in the late hours after midnight. The suspected perpetrators are three men, who fled the scene quickly and remain unidentified.
According to preliminary information from the Italian authorities, the young woman had just left the metro station, in an area surrounded by residential buildings, but almost empty at that hour. She was stopped by three men: two of them held her down, while the third sexually assaulted her.
After the incident, the three aggressors disappeared into the neighborhood's alleys, taking advantage of the darkness and the lack of passersby. Only the girl's screams broke the silence of the night, after she initially went through moments of shock.
The young woman managed to go to the hospital herself, to the emergency room of Pertini Hospital, where she received first aid and reported the incident. Immediately after the report, law enforcement arrived at the hospital.
The Rome prosecutor's office has opened a criminal investigation, while the Carabinieri are working intensively to clarify the circumstances of the attack. For the moment, the identity of the perpetrators remains unclear. The victim stated that the three people appeared suddenly, but was unable to give a precise description of their age or characteristics.
Authorities are analyzing footage from security cameras in the area and have appealed for any potential witnesses who may have seen or heard anything suspicious during that night.
The event has brought the issue of public safety in urban areas and the protection of women during nighttime back to the center of debate, provoking strong reactions and concern in Italian public opinion.
