A gunshot incident has been recorded near the Israeli Consulate in the Beşiktaş neighborhood of Istanbul, triggering a wide security operation and alert in the area.
According to the BBC, three people were killed and two police officers were injured in the attack. These figures remain unconfirmed by Turkish authorities.
Local media reports that several gunshots were heard at the scene, while security forces immediately intervened by surrounding the perimeter around the consulate. Numerous police units and special teams are in the area, while movement has been restricted for security reasons.
The consulate has been closed for at least two years and is likely unstaffed, a local community member informed The Jerusalem Post.
An Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman stated that the incident is under investigation and confirmed that the consulate is currently unstaffed.
Three people were killed and two police officers were injured in the incident, media reports said. According to Turkish broadcaster NTV, the three people killed were the attackers who were shot dead by Turkish security forces.
Video footage obtained by Reuters showed a police officer pulling out a gun and running away as shots rang out. One person was seen covered in blood.
A heavy armed police presence is always maintained in the area near the Israeli consulate, Reuters noted. Television footage showed armed police patrolling the area after the shooting.
Turkish Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said he had appointed three investigators to investigate the incident, acknowledging that it occurred outside the Israeli consulate, but did not comment on whether the incident was anti-Semitic or anti-Zionist in nature.
