Turkish media criticizes Greece-Israel missile deal, claiming violation of Lausanne Treaty...
Another episode of questioning Greek competences in the Eastern Mediterranean is recorded by Turkey, on the occasion of a French Navy exercise in the Crete area. Specifically, the Heraklion Station issued NAVTEX (254/26) for the conduct of a major naval exercise in the period from 5 to 8 April, in two maritime areas to the west and east of Crete. The area to the east of the island is included in the Athens FIR and in the Greek area of responsibility for issuing maritime notices.
Ankara reacted by issuing a counter-NAVTEX (0370/26), claiming that the area in question, according to Turkish positions, falls under its competence to issue relevant notifications. The Turkish side even went further by unilaterally reissuing a NAVTEX for the same French Navy exercise, escalating diplomatic tension in the region.
Turkish media against the Greece-Israel agreement
Turkish media do not see positively the signing of a major defense deal between Greece and Israel worth 757 million dollars (about 655 million euros) for the supply of PULS missiles, which will replace the MLRS systems. According to them, “Greece is once again violating the Treaty of Lausanne” by deploying Israeli missiles in the Dodecanese and other Aegean islands.
Çelik: "There is extreme behavior from Greece and Cyprus"
The ruling party's spokesman, Ömer Çelik, speaking on the "A Haber" television network, stated that there is extreme behavior from Greece and Cyprus in the region.
“Imagine the map of Turkey: above us, the Russia-Ukraine war has been going on for five years – in the Black Sea. Below us, unfortunately, the genocide in Gaza continues. Israel’s aggression towards Lebanon and Syria continues. On the left, there is some extreme behavior from the Greek Cypriot side and Greece, while in the Balkans there are ethnically based tensions and provocations. To the east, in Iran, there is a major crisis due to the aggression it faces. From the Pakistan-India war to the US-Europe tensions, a series of divisions are shifting here. Turkey is the reference point right in the middle of all of this,” he said.
Frigate "Elli" heading to Cyprus with the "Kentauros" system
The frigate “Elli” departed for Cyprus equipped with the Greek-made “Kentauros” anti-drone system to take on duties in the region and replace the frigate “Psara”. Together with the modern Belharra frigate “Kimon”, it is expected to continue to provide protection for the island from a possible attack.
The frigate “Elli” is equipped with the “Kentauros” anti-UAV system, developed by the Greek innovation ecosystem and successfully tested in the European operation “Aspides” in the Red Sea. The other frigate, “Kimon”, is considered among the most modern in the world.
It is recalled that there are also two pairs of Greek F-16 fighter jets on the island, stationed at the "Andreas Papandreou" base in Paphos.
Airborne violations
Four violations of air traffic rules and fifteen airspace violations by Turkish aircraft were recorded on Monday in the northeastern, central and southeastern Aegean.
According to the announcement of the Greek General Defense Staff, a total of 9 violations of the rules were recorded (one by the CN-235 and 8 by the UAVs).
Also, 15 airspace violations were recorded: 6 by CN-235, 4 by ATR-72 and 5 by UAVs.
The aircraft in question were identified and intercepted according to international rules, as is common practice.
