A 20-year-old man attacked the home of Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, with a Molotov cocktail, according to statements from San Francisco police in the US.
The suspect, who allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at a $27 million North Beach home around 4:12 a.m. on Good Friday, has been arrested but has not been identified. He reportedly threatened to set fire to OpenAI's San Francisco headquarters.
No injuries were reported in the attack. San Francisco police said they responded to a call of a fire at Altman's home. Authorities said there was a "fire in an exterior doorway" and the suspect fled on foot.
About an hour later, just after 5:00 a.m., police responded to reports of a man threatening to burn down a building near OpenAI's headquarters. Officers said they identified the man as the suspect in the attack on Altman's home and immediately arrested him.
OpenAI, best known for creating the popular chatbot ChatGPT, confirmed the incident in an emailed statement. "Early this morning, someone threw a Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman's home and also threatened our headquarters in San Francisco. Fortunately, no one was injured," a company spokesperson said.
"We deeply appreciate the speed with which the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) responded and the city's support in keeping our officers safe. The perpetrator is in custody and we are cooperating with authorities in the investigation," the response said.
OpenAI sent a memo Friday morning to inform its employees about the incident, saying there was no immediate threat to them or other offices, and that there was an increased police and security presence at the company's offices.
