Doctors in a neonatal intensive care unit in Gaza are scrambling to find sources of energy and basic medicine for their tiny patients, who could die within minutes if the incubators lose power and shut down.
"We appeal to everyone to send the necessary medical supplies to this critical department or else we will face a major disaster. If we don't have lights in these wards where there are 55 babies, we will lose them all within five minutes," said Dr Nasser Bulbul at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.
Ashraf al-Qidra, spokesman for Gaza's health ministry, said there were 130 newborn babies in electric incubators across the Gaza Strip.
He stated that the generators in the hospitals and especially in the "al-Shifa" hospital, the largest of the 13 public hospitals in Gaza, were running out of supply.
"We consider fuel to be the most essential life-saving service, including use in incubators, but we don't know how long that will last.
We appeal to the whole world to help us with fuel. We have even asked our public and private gas stations to donate anything that can save fuel to help save lives in hospitals," he said.
Gaza authorities say at least 5,087 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli airstrikes since October 7, including 2,055 children and more than 15,000 people wounded.
