The right wing of Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky accused Elon Musk of obstructing the offensive against Russia by severing the link of Ukrainian underwater drones with its satellites. Ukraine had prepared to strike Russian ships in Crimea, but Musk's decision to cut the satellite link led to Russia retaliating by killing scores of civilians.
The owner of Tesla and SpaceX, the space company on which the Starlink satellites, essential for civil and military communications in Ukraine, depend, has not denied having thwarted the attack against the Russian fleet. But he claims he has no hand in anything, as he said he simply responded negatively to an "urgent request" from the Kiev government to extend Starlink coverage to Crimea and, in particular, to the port of Sevastopol, where the Russian fleet was anchored. According to Isaacson, Musk feared that a small 'Pearl Harbor' in the Black Sea could prompt the Kremlin to use nuclear weapons.
Musk, however, argued that, if he had activated the satellites in Crimea, he would have been responsible for a massive escalation of the war.
This clearly shows that the fate of the war is in the hands of a single person, who acts as an independent sovereign on the international stage. A situation that many analysts are currently judging as unacceptable, and which perhaps now even worries Musk himself: at first he liked to become the protagonist of the defense of Ukraine, which was attacked and deprived of any communication system. But then the game got bigger than him, he began to fear Russian reprisals, and now, according to his biography, Elon wonders "how did I end up in this war?" .
It is a problem that American politics, unable to control digital technologies even as they become important in the military field, is unable to solve it, and that in the future will not necessarily affect only Musk. Political scientist Ian Bremmer notes, for example, that the development of artificial intelligence, if not brought under control by governments, is destined to upset geostrategic balances. / Corriere della Sera
