At the end of the press conference at the NATO summit in The Hague, US President Donald Trump was asked by journalist Deborah Haynes about the statement by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who earlier that day had described Trump as a "father" in efforts to stop the conflict between Iran and Israel.
Asked if he sees NATO member countries as his "children," Trump responded with irony:
“I like him. I think I like him. If I don't like him, I'll tell you. I'll come back and hit him hard, okay? (laughs) Very kind.”
Pushed to elaborate further on how he sees his allies who have implemented demands for increased defense spending, Trump added: "I think they need a little help."
Quoting one of the allied leaders, he said: “One of them said to me: ‘We have been trying to increase this percentage for 30 years. But until you came, nothing happened. What you did is extraordinary.’”
When asked whether NATO could function without US support, Trump avoided a direct answer by passing the ball to the Secretary General himself: "Ask Mark."
In closing, before leaving the podium, President Trump told the audience: “Remember, the US is the ‘hottest’ country in the world right now.”
