Does Iran still have a chance for peace talks with the US?

Iran's Foreign Ministry has said there is still a chance for peace talks with the United States. A senior Iranian official said that despite attacks on his country by America and Israel, covert efforts are being made to resume the search for a diplomatic solution. The comments will be seen as an olive branch to the Trump administration as it explores a diplomatic path forward.

Following the ceasefire announced by Donald Trump, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said the US must show that it is sincere in its desire for peace.

"Diplomacy should not be abused or used as a tool for deception or simply for some kind of psychological warfare against their opponents ," he said.

Iran felt that diplomacy had been betrayed, he said. US-Iran talks were on the verge of resuming when Israel attacked his country. And America had violated international law in its support for what he called "Zionist aggression."

But Mr. Baqaei said that diplomacy never ends, there are contacts, indirectly. My minister is talking to Oman, Qatar and others.

President Trump says he is ready to talk to Iran, but there are major hurdles to overcome. The US wants Iran to completely give up its nuclear enrichment program. Iran has long insisted it has the right to continue.

Across town, we saw the impact of Israel's strikes on Gisha, an upscale neighborhood in Tehran. Israel claims its attacks on Iranian figures were precisely targeted. In reality, they appear to have been far from surgical.

The airstrike occurred at 10:30 a.m. on a Friday morning two weeks ago. It blew a hole through four floors of reinforced concrete in the apartment block. The target may have been a nuclear scientist who lived there, but everyone in the building is now homeless. Engineers say it will almost certainly have to be demolished. The atmosphere in the Iranian capital seems calm and tense.

The Iranians fear the Israelis will resume their air campaign despite the ceasefire, but the foreign ministry spokesman said they "will respond" to any Israeli attack.
