'Apocalyptic' fire in Spain, two deaths confirmed; around 20,000

A large-scale fire has broken out in Spain, in the rural area between Sanauja and Ribelles, and is spreading rapidly towards the town of Agramunt, forcing authorities to order the isolation of thousands of residents and intervene with numerous firefighting forces.

According to authorities, the flames have engulfed over 6,500 hectares, classifying this as a generation six fire - extremely violent fires that even create their own weather through smoke clouds, known as pyrocumulus. Two men, aged 32 and 45, tragically lost their lives near Agramunt.

More than 20,000 residents of surrounding towns including Agramunt, Pons, Guissona and Oliola were forced to stay indoors due to thick smoke and the risk of the fire spreading. The sky above these areas has turned a deep orange color, while ash falls to the ground.

The fire has been described as "beyond all expectations" due to a dangerous combination of extreme dryness, scorching heat and winds of up to 125 km/h.

This has caused the flames to spread rapidly and unpredictably in several directions.

After the intervention of dozens of firefighting teams, aircraft, and aid from the first rains, the fire is currently under control, although the risk of resurgence remains high.

Authorities have decided to keep the INFOCAT emergency plan activated for extreme situations during the summer.

Images published on social media and by local media show apocalyptic scenes: cities covered in an orange haze, thick smoke rising up to 19 kilometers high and entire villages surrounded by flames.
